Chapter Eighteen

DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR, I usually expected the weather to start turning. November was the start of cold weather in the northeast, and that normally meant rain or in some cases, snow. Last year, we had a snowstorm the day after Halloween, which seemed to suggest that we were going to have a long winter.

It wasn’t until late in November that I realized that the weather hadn’t changed one bit during the course of the entire semester. It was still temperate, without a single sign of bad weather coming from those red-streaked skies and heavy clouds.

Of course, Stella thought it was adorable when I asked the question about weather to her one Saturday, when all three of us got together to watch our academy’s football team play another rival school. This rival was located on the Fourth Circle, and it was called the Infernal Institute of Higher Learning. This was supposed to be the biggest game all season, and sure enough, most of our students came out to support their team.

“It’s so cute that you think the weather might change down here,” said Stella, bumping into my shoulder during halftime. “I keep forgetting that you’ve only been down here for a couple months.”

“I’ve never lived anywhere where there wasn’t the prospect of snow in November,” I said with a shrug.

Piper, who was on my other side, started to laugh. She was dressed similarly as the rest of us, wearing our school colors of red and gold. The difference was that she was wearing her hair more loose than she usually did, which was a really great choice. She might have had her glasses on today, but she still looked just as beautiful to me as she ever did.

“It’s going to take some getting used to,” said Piper. “But I suppose if we miss the snow too much, we can just go back up to the human world.”

“It’s pretty popular with many demons to go north in the winter,” said Stella, using ‘north’ as a colloquial expression for the human world. “Sometimes you just want to get away from the heat.”

“So the exact opposite of a snowbird,” I joked. “Instead of going to Florida, demons go to Canada for the winter.”

Piper giggled. “I keep picturing someone like Professor Hightower bundled up in thick winter jackets and going skiing as her holiday break.”

“Someone like Hightower seems like she could probably work a couple poles,” said Stella, mimicking a skiing motion. “I get the impression she’s not as proper as she likes to present.”

“Stella!” said Piper, covering her mouth as she laughed. “Not so loud! What if someone hears you?”

“What, I’m sure our professors have sex lives of their own,” said Stella. “It’s not that hard to believe. Even Professor Reeves.”

The image of kindly old Professor Reeves laying down on a bed and using her finger to call someone over hit my mind. Instantly, I shook my head.

“No more talk about Professor Reeves’ sex life, please?” I said with a groan.
